Abstract:
Euclidean geometry is brought to bear for new, intuitive proofs of the $CAL$ Identity under the idealized Linear Shift Model for changing rates of mortality. The measure $CAL$ is the ``Cross Sectional Average Length of Life''. The $CAL$ Identity equates the current period value of $CAL$ with the cohort life expectancy of the cohort born $CAL$ years in the past. From this identity follow the basic relations for the gaps and lags between period and cohort life expectancy and changes over time.
