[Methods Protocol]

Welcome to the digital collection of "Causes of death - Life tables for national populations". This volume, published in 1972 by Samuel Preston, Nathan Keyfitz, and Robert Schoen, is a milestone in standardized data collection. Unfortunately, until now no machine readable copy of this data has been made publicly available. This collection includes cause of death rates for twelve cause categories and 48 populations and a wide range of years for a total of 180 distinct rate tables. We hope that this data will be of use to researchers interested in casting a wide net over historical changes in cause-of-death patterns. We wish to thank S. Preston and R. Schoen for their encouragement in this project, Lisa Yang for contributing to some of the OCR work, and Silvia Rizzi for advising on the graduation method.
